Information for Prospective School Board Candidates

    The Fort Edward Union Free School District is served by a seven-member Board of Education. The Board, as a legally constituted body of elected representatives, bears the responsibility of setting policy for the school district. Each Board member is elected by a public vote and serves a five-year term without pay. For more information on Board responsibilities, see Policy Series 1000: Bylaws.

    There are five (5) Board of Education seats open.
    One Board seat is to succeed Christina Durkee, who resigned effective June 1, 2023, for the remainder of her term, commencing immediately after the election or as close thereto upon taking an oath of office, and expires on June 30, 2025. 
    One Board seat is to succeed Amanda Durkee, who resigned effective August 31, 2023, for the remainder of her term, commencing immediately after the election or as close thereto upon taking an oath of office, and expires on June 30, 2026. 
    One Board seat is to succeed Ella Collins, who resigned effective June 30, 2024, for the remainder of her term, commencing immediately after the election or as close thereto upon taking an oath of office, and expires on June 30, 2027. 
    The two other available Board seats are for five-year terms, which commence on July 1, 2024 and expire on June 30, 2029, to succeed Thomas Roche and Timothy Clark, whose terms expire on June 30, 2024.

    Process for Prospective School Board Candidates
    Nominating petitions for the May 21, 2024 Board of Education Election must be filed with the District Clerk by April 22, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. (30 days before election). Candidate packets are available from the District Clerk’s office at 220 Broadway Fort Edward, NY 12828. To obtain a candidate packet, please contact the District Clerk at (518) 747-4529 x3113.

    What Prospective School Board Candidates Should Expect
    Board of Education members attend Regular Meetings, which are typically held on the second Monday of each month. Additional Special Meetings and Workshops may be added to the schedule, as needed. Board members also serve on the Board or District committees.

    Position on the Ballot
    New York State Education Law § 2032 states that the determination of a candidate’s name on the ballot shall be done by a drawing. This drawing will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, in the Fort Edward Union Free School District’s library, at 220 Broadway Fort Edward, NY 12828. Candidates may name a designee if they cannot be present for the drawing.

    Polls are open 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

    Voter Registration: 
    Voters may register online with the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles https://dmv.ny.gov/more-info/electronic-voter-registration-application.
    Voters may register in person at Washington County Board of Elections at 1153 Burgoyne Ave, Fort Edward, NY 12828 (518) 746-2180. 
    Registration forms may also be picked up at Fort Edward Village Clerk's office at 118 Broadway, Fort Edward, NY 12828 (518) 747-5212. 

    Military voters: Contact the District Clerk's Office about military voter registration and the military ballot application.

    Early Mail Voter Information: First day to apply for an early mail ballot for the Budget Vote and Election is Monday, April 22, 2024.
    Early mail voter ballots must be returned to the District Clerk's Office by May 21, 2024 at 5:00pm. Registered voters may request an application for an early mail voter ballot by contacting the district clerk's office at (518) 747-4529 x3113. Completed applications must be received by the District Clerk at least seven days before the election if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, or the day before the election if the ballot is to be delivered personally to the voter or the voter’s designated agent.

    Absentee Voter Information: First day to apply for an absentee ballot for the Budget Vote and Election is Monday, April 22, 2024.
